about

~ Drone ~
the second album by Chip Hazard.

“Thematically, I wanted to create a sonic space for this concept that best encapsulates two starkly contrasting drones: the escalating and unrelenting city hum, and the resilient harmony of nature’s primordial howl.” - Chris Young (Chip Hazard)

Opening the record with three consecutive movements along the commute to work, capturing the chaotic environment of an ever-expanding city amidst the daily grind. A melancholic array of tones become increasingly darker and heavier as the reality of a 9-to-5 existence sets in. The arrangement suggesting that the compounding effect of monotony beating down on those grappling with the grind, whilst being confined to the same achromatic world every day is a finite existence which inevitably leads to burning out.

The flip side of the album is a trilogy that focuses heavily on the catastrophic bushfires that continue to burn throughout Australia each year, and the subsequent regeneration through pyriscence that brings a cyclic balance to nature. The sequence begins by orienting the listener within the sounds of the Australian outback: a variety of bird calls and instrumental voices combining to honour the natural orchestra of the bush. Following a foreboding turn, there is a rippling sense of urgency as delicacy gives way to a post-rock refrain that revels in the awesome magnitude of Australian bushfires. Amongst the aftermath and absence of abundant life, a glimmer of hope begins to reveal itself as the serotinous cycle of nature begins once again. This side of ‘Drone’ incorporates some traditional indigenous percussive instruments as an homage to the significance of relationships to country, and toward a deeper understanding of attested indigenous land management practices that safeguard our bushland from uncontrollable fire.
